The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is based on the traditional eating habits from the countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea based on the consumption of fresh, seasonal and local foods. It is characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and a high intake of fibre, antioxidants, whole grain cereals, legumes, olive oil, fruits, vegetables and nuts, with numerous beneficial health effects. The novel strategies for tackling youth obesity need to promote the consumption of healthy Mediterranean products.
Under the MED4YOUTH project four healthy and nutritional products, including sourdough bread, chickpeas and hummus, mixed nuts and pomegranate juice, have been included in the personalized meal plan of the adolescents in the MD intervention group to increase their adherence to the MD, and proving the products effectiveness against youth obesity and associated CVD risk factors.
